What is citizen science?

IMG_9245.HEIC

You don’t have to be a professional scientist to contribute to scientific research.

Did you know that you don't have to be a professional scientist to contribute to scientific research?

Citizen science promotes collaboration between non-professionals and scientists, creating a two-way process that benefits both parties. Because of limited access to offshore waters and narrow contact zones, only about a quarter of citizen science projects are focused on marine or coastal areas, making these kinds of projects even more valuable.

why should the industry's stakeholders contribute to this?

Contributing to citizen science projects benefits both researchers and citizens, and can even influence local policies and education initiatives. In addition, engaging in citizen science projects can improve a boatyard's reputation and demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Advancements in technology, such as AI and interconnected devices, combined with citizen science, can create management systems with continuous environmental information and process larger volumes of data. So, while data collection tools have evolved, methodological approaches must also evolve to ensure data quality. Citizen science promotes environmental awareness and education, which is essential for decision-making and adapting to climate change. So, get involved in marine citizen science and make a difference for our planet!
