disruptive innovations within the industry

Disruptive innovations is a concept that implies a perspective on innovation-driven growth where smaller companies with less resources challenge the established operations of larger companies. These new technical innovations and/or business models disrupt and challenge the existing markets.

Some disruptive innovations in the boatyard industry have been in the area of dock construction and mooring buoys to reduce their negative impact on the environment. One way to minimize negative effects from noise disturbance during construction is to use bubble curtains to dampen the sound emitted during pile driving. This reduces sediment dispersion that clouds up the water during the construction of the dock, which improves the ecosystem. It has been found that elevated docks over water surfaces and those that are placed at shallower depths in wave-protected areas are less likely to cast a shadow on the bottom vegetation. This type of design, coupled with using materials that let light pass through the dock and reflect underneath it, has been shown to minimize shading. These environmentally-friendly solutions have disrupted the market by minimizing the negative impact of boating on coastal ecosystems.

Further, another technology in the boatyard industry that can come to be a disruptive innovation is the analysis of hydroelastic responses. This involves advanced methods to calculate fluid dynamics and improve the way boats go through the ocean in high-speed. The technology can potentially disrupt the traditional methods used in the industry and lead to new approaches in boat design and manufacturing.

Sonar measurement is a technology that is already used within the boatyard industry to measure ocean depth. However, there are innovative ways to use sonar measurements, for instance by integrating it with AI and machine learning to give more exact and detailed pictures of the seabed. This could change and improve the boatyard industry by facilitating monitoring of the boatyard’s environmental impact in the ocean .
